"Exposure as Visual Metaphor"

Almost Black / Almost White & Nothing but Grey

Assignment

Create six photos (2 for each of the 3 challenges) that are aesthetically strong, as the subject will be very dark, very white & almost all grey.  When viewing these images as a group if we wish that the Almost Black image was lighter, or that the Almost White image was dark, then these images are failures.  You must consider what subject matter or situation would merit the “poetic” use of a value on the edge of the extreme.

Almost Black
-       Night photography using a tripod

-       Underexpose in the camera (any lighting situation)

-       Underexpose your image in Lightroom

-       Photograph a black or dark object on a near black background

-       Overexpose your image in the camera (any lighting situation)

-       Photograph white objects on a near white background

-       Photograph in snow, fog, sand or desert.

-       Overexpose your image in the Lightroom

-       Use Higher Contrast in Lightroom

Nothing But Grey
-       Atmosphere such at fog, smog or smoke

-       Edit using lower contrast

-       Photograph an area that has flat light

-       Select a subject that is steal, chrome or aluminum.  Something grey.

*Remember the idea is that your image is strengthened by the use of the limited tones and that tonal values can a metaphor. There may be a small amount of blacks and whites in your image for Nothing But Greyhowever the majority of your image and your subject will be created through this limitation of tones and in many ways defined by it.
